Writing Naked delivers raw, skin-scratched emotion from a writer who has struggled his entire to life to look himself in the mirror and say, "Michael, I love you." In this debut essay collection, Michael Murray invites you to follow him on a meandering journey to witness glimpses of the moments in his life that have brought him to here-- a place of solace and heart.Essays, each one ripe with story, work to understand his purpose in life. From his first day on earth to his struggles with drugs and alcohol, Murray exposes himself in ways only a person deemed "irrational" would consider doing. But that's just it: Murray isn't irrational. He's a man experiencing the lifelong process of coping with cards the universe dealt him, for better or worse.… (mehr)

I have to give the writer kudos for the utter honesty of this book. It can be painful to read; living through that kind of self-examination, and then writing about it and putting it out for the world to read and judge, takes a kind of courage I really envy. The format of some of the essays really didn't work for me, but the nice thing about the mix of writing styles he tries out is that another chapter is more likely to click.

"Writing Naked" won't be for everybody, but if the premise intrigues you, give it a look. Murray's work will be worth keeping an eye on. ( )

One more alcohol addict who tries a new life - and begins to write.
About, of course, his useless past.
I took it as a sort of cathartic confession with a glug of poetry.
No more, not less.
Confusing. But honest.
Let's keep sober! ( )
