A White Pine Chipmunk Invasion is the fifth book in the Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly series. This story is told in third person through the eyes of Winslow, one of the chipmunk troublemakers in White Pine, and Teegan, a Nile crocodile shifter, who has his eye on taming Winslow.
I’ve read three of the six books in this series, not all in order, and I think it may have partly affected my view of AWPI. I felt a bit lost with the characters because there were so many of them, and I couldn’t form an attachment to them. In book four, Winslow and his troublemaker twin brother, Sparks, are introduced once they move to White Pine, and so is Teegan. Sometimes series can be read out of order or as standalones, I wouldn’t recommend it with this series, there are just too many characters.
In this story the Fieldstone chipmunk family visit White Pine for Christmas and a few funny things happen, but I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I did A Paranormal Chipmunk Christmas. I mentioned that it may have been partly because I didn’t read the books in order, but it was mostly because the story read choppy and there was little detail as to the progression of Winslow’s and Teegan’s relationship. The best way I can describe it is as if the author got an idea, wrote the line down, then got another separate idea, wrote that line down and then didn’t bother to segue smoothly from one scene/conversation to the next. It felt like incomplete ideas that she rapidly wrote down to publish a holiday story in time. It was like half an effort with minimal work, because it certainly didn’t flow well. We don’t get much background other than telling the readers this is how Winslow or Teegan felt/thought or did without much time put into showing us how their relationship developed. If you want to know what happened I'll put it behind a spoiler here.
What backs me up on the lack of investment in writing this book, is I’m now reading Book 4 and it reads more smoothly, the plot and actions segue better together, more effort appears to be put into making it a story rather than a bunch of rapid thoughts to push out a book.
I can’t say much else about AWPI because there isn’t much of a story other than the Fieldstone family did this or that, Winslow and Teegan did this or that. Sparks felt this or that and I didn’t feel invested in the plot or characters. The only thing the story did was tell how Winslow and Teegan finally ended up together or rather let it be known to everyone that they’re together. If you care how they do it, then get the book, if you don’t than this book doesn’t contribute much else to the series. Actually, I’d recommend just borrowing the book instead.
I’d really like to give this 2.5 Stars, because it answers a few questions about Teegan and Winslow. Other than that, I’m disappointed in the book and wouldn’t recommend it. In the end, it’s 2 Stars
