CW: Self sacrifice (stabbing themsleves), animal sacrifice

Well that wasn't great.

Sorry, I lie.

The last 10% was really good. The rest was quite dull.

Essentially it was a drawn out "Does he like me?, "Does she like me for me or my crown? drama. The writing was clunky in places and nice in others. I was disappointed that the world was neglected in favour of the romance. I have read other reviews and see that there might be some own voice or not own voice issues. I don't know enough to comment but I do prefer to read own voices as it brings authenticity to the story.

To me it could have been set in space and it wouldn't have made a difference because the focus wasn't really on the world itself for the majority of the book. I found it disappointing that only the last part of the book really delved into the fantasy elements of the story.

Just not for me.

Fantasy based on Aztec & Mayan legends. Mayanna is kind-hearted and struggles with the sacrifices. It was really interesting in the beginning. The middle was a little slow. Than it built up to an exciting cliff hanger. ( )

I can't believe how long it has taken me to read this book! I honestly purchased this book because of the hype surrounding it when it was released back in 2020. I was very intimidated by this book. Couldn't begin to tell you why.

The Seventh Sun follows our main character Mayana. A girl who questions everything and who has a kind heart. She wants to know why they do sacrifices. She also cannot perform any of the sacrifices because of her kind heart.

Mayana gets chosen to compete to become Queen by marrying Prince Ahkin after his father's sudden death. While at the palace, Mayana begins to question more and makes others question things as well.

Ahkin and Mayana have an instant attraction and connection. The other girls don't stand a chance... which means they will all be sacrificed if Mayana is chosen to be Ahkin's queen.

I had such a fun time reading this book! I'm not gonna lie, I thought this book was going to be more like the masterpiece that is The Mummy. That's okay, I still loved this book.

I loved Mayana. She's so kind and has the biggest heart. It just sucks that everyone around her doesn't see that and only sees her as weak. I'm hoping that in the next book Ahkin forgives her for not being able to do the sacrifice that he asked her to do.

I'm happy the second book is already out and I won't have to wait to pick it up! ( )

A rich, but cruel world, Customs that bind everyone, especially those in the nobility and a selection process where those not chosen are condemned to be sacrificed to appease the gods. No wonder it's difficult for Princess Mayana to remain sane. She cares about most of the other princesses who make up her competition for the emperor's hand, while also suspecting their society is based upon lies. Following her through the marriage selection process makes for fascinating reading and the book ends just beyond one major cliffhanger. I'm so glad I ordered the sequel as soon as I closed the cover on this one. ( )
