Lauren2013 | May 5, 2023 |   Hard Asset contains some scenes and dialog reminiscent of the movie, Romancing the Stone, but the book misses out on the humor and the chemistry generated by the characters in the film. Cultural differences are explored in the story, but the majority of the conflict is the struggle for survival in the dangerous environment of the jungle, while being chased by hostile forces. The two main characters overcome the trials of the past to develop a relationship while on the run, but overall their romance, like this book, was a bit of a disappointment. Cobra Security is hired by the ICC to protect Shanti Lahiri, the prosecutor assigned to investigate the charges of genocide and war crimes again the Rohingya people of Myanmar. Connor O'Neill, a former Delta Force operative, leads her protection detail and is determined to keep a professional distance despite the attraction the blooms between them. But all bets are off when Shanti and Connor are stranded in the jungle and must work together to escape a ruthless killer hell-bent on destroying the evidence in Shanti's possession.
Despite the action-packed plot and the compelling setting focusing on the Rohingya genocide, the romance between Connor and Shanti falls flat.
The heartbreaking descriptions of the attacks on the Rohingya and the very real suffering of the refugees make for distressing, but important reading. We in the West take our safety, security, and freedoms for granted, and it is crucial that we never lose sight of the plights of those who are victims of cruel and tyrannical regimes.
Writing a romance against this backdrop is difficult, and Clare puts in a good effort. Unfortunately, Connor and Shanti's relationship fails to completely resonate mainly due to the fact that Shanti never manages to overcome the initial impression of being a self-righteous do-gooder. Some of her observations on war and combat are particularly naive and sanctimonious. While she does come to realize that not all soldiers are vicious monsters and sometimes one needs to fight to preserve life, the damage is already done.
Connor, on the other hand, is a fantastic hero. Despite the trauma of war, he has a strong moral compass and a profound desire to protect those who cannot fight for themselves. To be honest, Shanti does not deserve him and their connection, both physical and emotional, feels forced rather than natural.
Overall, this is worth the read for the political message, but Clare has written better romances.
