Good but few Snow Goons

I loved the second half of the strips, but the first half was slow since I was expecting winter and Snow Goons based on the title. But it started in summer? Different title would have given me different expectations. Good strips, just not what I thought it would be for the most part. ( )

he has an exceptional gift to capture both childhood and parenthood so perfectly. plus friendship, and you have this nearly perfect collection. loved this. (4.25 stars)

from august 2019:
this was fantastic, just what i needed right now. the world is trash and i wanted something light and funny to take my mind off it. i hadn't read these comics since i was probably in high school and they were different than i remember. much more imaginative and also grown up than i'd remembered. both in the words that are often used and also in the stories about parenting a wild and creative child. i didn't remember any comics about parenting, but those certainly landed now since our guy is the same age as calvin, and in some ways just as willful and energetic. i do wish he had toned down the "boys hate girls" theme that came and went throughout, but otherwise this was great. the drawings are simple (seemingly) but convey a full range of emotions and experience.

so it was a little less fun and escapist than i expected, but very good and insightful, and funny. probably i should read more of these now. (4 stars) ( )

Calvin is the weirdest little kid, since he seems to enjoy winter as much as the rest of us enjoyed summer break. His priorities are all about nailing Susie with as many slushballs as possible, getting away with being a bad boy and still being on Santa’s “good list,” and building an army of deranged snowmen - which is the opposite of what I wanted to do during winter as a child (sipping hot cocoa by the fire with a good book, if you must know). He sure seems to have a lot of fun with it, even if it causes him some philosophical problems (can one get away with being bad, since Santa can’t possibly be able to monitor all children at all times) and gets him into major trouble with his parents. If we can learn anything from Calvin’s high-jinx, it’s that if you’re going to build snowgoons, make sure that your imagination isn’t quite so vivid that you hallucinate that they’re really coming to life and therefore have to stay up all night icing them into submission!
