In a split second, life can steal a last breath . . . and derail all future plans. While flying home after a phone call that left me heartbroken, a row to myself would have been ideal. Instead, I was unknowingly sitting shoulder to shoulder with a strikingly attractive single dad and ex-Marine. I could have pretended not to notice the man, but there was something familiar about him. It didn't take long before I pieced together where I knew him from or why he was back in my life. With chaos holding me hostage, I wanted to hide but couldn't avoid Brett Pearson, our old family friend, and my teenage crush, because he kindly offered to help out with my family's business-The Barrel House. Handling my father's distillery would be a distraction from my brutal reality. Except, I never paid close attention to the art of making bourbon, unlike Brett, who was full of bourbon knowledge. He offered to teach me a thing or two, but all I could focus on was the way his lips moved when he spoke to me. I needed to grieve, and my head was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but my heart was splitting at the seams. Bourbon was spilled, drinks were shared, but could passion ignite from a dying last wish?… (mehr)

On her 16th birthday, Melody shares her first kiss with her crush Brett. Unfortunately he is not going to make her dreams of a family, home with a white picket fence and the perfect life come true.

We fast forward 10 years, Melody is living life as a wife without the ring, wedding and no chance of kids anywhere in the future. Her boyfriend Ace has well, he's taken her for granted so long that she knows she needs to break up with him and find some kind of happiness somewhere. Possibly move back to Vermont where her family is.

Tragedy comes in the mail.....a letter meant to be sent after her father has passed away. He's fought cancer once but there is to be no happy ending this time. It's the kick in the butt Mel needs to find her way to getting back on track for her dreams.

Brett and Mel end up back together working at her father's shop. Incidentally he makes bourbon. Mel and her sister Journey now own this distillery that neither one has ever really had an interest in running but can Mel let her father's dream and hard work go?

Other than giving closure to Ace when he goes up to Vermont to "win" her back there isn't much drama. Yes, her dad dying and her grief are dramatic but unlike other romance stories they aren't always in the middle of a major event. Life rolls on, at a nice pace, towards something they both wanted. Brett needed to do his time in the military, marry, have a child and lose his wife. Mel had to find her career and then lose her relationship to know for sure the youthful dream she had is really what she wants and she's not settling for anything less.

There are some heavy, emotional times. Some...oh my, that's so sweet moments. When she finally reads her dads letter it starts a new sort of tradition for her and her sister. A way her father said he would always be there for them, to give them advice and whatever they need. It'll make the title mean even more.

A nice love story. If you are looking for hot and heavy, not here. This is about building the relationship and knowing "this is the one".

I feel like I read a different book than everyone else. Yes Melody came back home because her daddy was dying and that is the part I felt she was feeling and that would understandable to be heartbroken. However I didn't find that she was heartbroken due to her relationship with Ace, she stated a couple of times that she was fine with it, that she wasn't sad about it, she was more in love with the idea of being in love and that she wanted marriage and white picket fence. She ended up reconnecting with her teenage crush Brett. I didn't feel the crushing love that these two had but was happy that they reconnected and were able to get there happy ending.

rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions..(booksprout) ( )
