Being the third volume of the Leafy Tom Adventure series, which finds the child witch Phoebe largely in the Land of Failed Witches and bereft of the emerald which is both the source and manifestation of most of her supernatural powers. Moreover, her witch family is imprisoned elsewhere and unable to come to her aid, hence she is compelled to try and recover her emerald in the company of some humans, witches, and representatives of the natural kingdom of whom she is pretty suspicious, often with good reason. Both traitors and true allies are well-drawn characters, and the otherworldly landscape of the forbidding territory which she traverses is evocative and compelling. I was particularly drawn to the animals who orchestrate her attempt to rejoin her family. It's a great read and will be of interest to readers of all ages.

Another entry in the Leafy Tom series. This one finds our heroine losing her emerald and having to search for it, with the help of a teenage witch she has just met. The adult witches are missing, so she is on her own. In the process, she finds herself traveling with stranger companions than she ever thought possible, and has to trust people she has never had good reason to trust before.
