I'm still new to Spanish reading, so the novelty of it may bias me to enjoying these books more, but man was this book amazing. At first I thought this would be a ghost story, then I thought it'd be a Candide retelling since the protagonist, 15-year-old Fernando was going through a spell of really bad misfortune, but this story was so much more. There were so many twists that took me by surprise and I almost think it should be required reading for every twelve year old boy, but I'll speak on my favorite aspect of this book. The adult characters are fully fleshed out, they are complicated and make mistakes but they love the kids in their lives. So many children's and YA books completely flatten their adult characters to give more focus to the kids and teens, but even though we see the adults in this novel through Fernando's eyes, the reader is given enough to understand every adult deeply. This novel touches on mental-health, self-harm, domestic violence, and death and it does it with so much sensitivity and care. I wept. ( )
