Literary Nonfiction. Poetry. Religion. Travel. Most of this remarkable book was originally type-written on small pieces of paper as the author, working as a poet in the streets of New Orleans and other cities, observed the scenes around her as well as her inner world. These prose transcripts of time and place, written around and between poems, reflect a poetic sensitivity to the visual and sonic values of words and phrases while exploring language as a tool of pilgrimage and spiritual engagement. Embodying elements of poetry, fiction, and memoir, the book also embraces the realm of collaborative performance art: the sound of clacking keys and spectacle of the typewriter allow the public square to become aware of itself appearing on the page. As the text's creation is performed for the world, the world also performs in the mirror of the text.… (mehr)

From the lovely cover and engaging description of this book, I expected much more. I didn't finish it. ( )

NOTE: I won a free eBook copy of this book in MOBI format from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers (July 2020).

This is not so much a novel as it is a book of poetry and meandering prose. In reading it from cover to cover, I struggled with determining what the book is actually "about." Then I realized that the title mirrors the book's content: different strains of thought run through each sentence in much the same way as currents of water flow in every direction. While Lierl reveals many universal truths and has moments of brilliant insight, the experiences she communicates in each chapter is highly individualized. Readers may have difficulty relating to her bohemian adventures and nomadic travels. Moreover, some of the events she relates are simply banal. The reading experience waffles between the arcane and the accessible. The reader does not drown in these currents of prose, per se, but there are many instances in which she might find herself in over her head. ( )
