The design concepts from the Pilot Plant study contracts for McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Corporation, Martin Marietta, Inc., Honeywell, Inc., and Boeing Engineering and Construction Company are analyzed for optical performance. The average annual efficiencies for collecting incident solar energy and redirecting the energy to the receiver are determined. Five designs are considered since Boeing has heliostat field layouts for compatibility with both the McDonnell Douglas and Martin Marietta receivers. To provide for a direct comparison of the design concepts, the same values for tracking errors, mirror surface waviness, and reflectivity of glass mirrors are used for each contractor. Values for the total annual energy incident on the receiver, net optical efficiency, cosine efficiency, power loss due to shading, power loss due to blocking, atmospheric absorption, and loss due to spillage at the receiver are determined for the five design concepts. Additional data is also presented on the sensitivity of spillage losses to focusing method, mirror waviness, tracking errors, and facet focal length (temperature).
