I’ve got a Travel Bucket List have you? I often daydream about the places on it and Hadrian’s Wall is one of them. Anton Hodge has just managed to take me there without leaving home. It’s something of a historical come travel guide with a slight Bill Bryson style to it and this is how I enjoy getting factual information. Rolling it up in intelligent, tongue in cheek banter makes a history lesson far more interesting and it’s not all Ancient and Roman history. Some of the modern stories about towns close to The Wall these days are quite amazing. One in particular, about a terrible outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 2001 was incredible to read. Setting out with only a week to walk, the author has some funny run ins with B&B owners, drank lots of beer, met some odd people, came face to face with a few bulls and had to buy a new pair of boots after day one! In spite of everything he had a great time and it made for a fun and interesting to read. ( )
