If these two don't kill each other, they might fall in love. Rand hates Jax because he's the laid-back, vegan-eating, tree-hugging, total-Zen-until-I-get-a-chance-to-screw-you president of Sigma Mu Tau, the nerdy fraternity that's the sworn enemy of Rand's house, Alpha Lambda Alpha. What a phony! Jax hates Rand for being the privileged, rich-heir-to-an-oil-empire, environment-destroying, soul-sucking president of the ALA jocks--but mostly because Rand hated him first. Rand has sent nothing but hateful vibes his way since the day they met. What a douche! The enemies have never had a single conversation that didn't involve shouting--until Jax's old Buick breaks down on a road trip and Rand plays reluctant rescuer. Jax is forced to sit on Rand's dead cow seats. Rand learns chickens can enter the living room and that Jax's beliefs are more than skin-deep. The bitter rivals embark on a quest to save a family member and discover that sometimes animosity is a mask for crazy-hot attraction. With this much face time, head-to-head might become heart-to-heart. HEAD TO HEAD is an enemies to lovers, forced proximity, opposites attract, searching for his sister, clashing cultures, MM romance--with a whole lot of fracking. First, I’ll review the cover. I like it. I think both the cover models look like the characters.
I read this book when it first came out as an ARC but somehow life got in the way and I wasn’t able to write the review then. Anyway, here it is. I read the first two books before this one and enjoyed book two quite a lot. This one tops it by just a little bit. Which in a way is surprising. I was concerned that there would be a lot of shouting and fighting in this story because of the way the first book started with Jax and Rand having a screaming match out in the street and then in the office. Thankfully, there wasn’t as much yelling in this one. The blurb does a good example of explaining what the plot is about so I won’t rehash it all that much.
Both characters are pretty nice guys even though both made assumptions about what the other person was like, so it colored their interactions. They find out they have more in common than they thought. They both want to protect the environment, and care about their families. There’s a scene that takes place where Jax and Rand chase after a guy and catch him, and Rand tells Jax about his past, they both realize why Rand seems to hate Jax. It was rather a strange reason brought on by physical similarities and pretty much nothing else. I like how Rand got a long with Jax’s family and how they helped him with something that had been on his mind for a long time. I enjoyed the character growth and the detail in the scenes.
The big conflict at the end happens because of Rand’s father. His father is an oil tycoon who isn’t afraid of tricking and manipulating people, including his own children, to get what he wants. He promises Rand he’ll implement Rand’s environmentally friendly ideas. So, Rand is all into joining the company. This all happens while Jax is working in the rainforest and they have a long-distance relationship going on. I thought the conflict and resolution to their break-up and reconnection was well done. I don’t think Jax does as much character growth in this story as Rand does. Rand in a way is kind of naïve. He believes his dad tells the truth and will treat him fairly. Rand learns to value himself more, have more confidence, and stop being under his father’s thumb.
The Head to Head plot was slightly more complicated than the plots in the first two books. That’s why I think this deserves 4.5 Stars, but since I can’t give half stars here on Goodreads, I’ll give this 4 Stars. I would recommend this book to others.
I received an ARC of this book from the authors for an honest and unbiased review. ( )
