Wow! Just wow! I had a few stops and starts. Too many things in life, but it was always in the back of my mind to finish it. I had time the last few days, and as I said.. just wow!

What a good story! The author is very good about describing everything, without overdoing it. You do feel like you are there. I was told this book was YA, but although the main characters are kids, this book is for adults too.

Now I can't wait to read book 2, "Seekers of the Fox". I need to know what happens to Lachlan! ( )

Children of the Fox is a 2023 Lone Star novel. Kevin Sands wrote The Blackthorn Key, which has been really popular at our school. I think this novel is better:) Book two in this series has been ordered as well: Seekers of the Fox.

You meet Callan as a young kid learning the art of conning people by the "old man." The old man teaches him all the rules, but one day he leaves--later in the novel, you learn why he leaves. Callan now has plans for his future, but he needs money. One of the first rules of a con is to offer what the other person wants. When Mr. Solomon invites him to his house along with other kids who have different skills, Cal knows that everything he wants--money--is being used to get him to complete a job. He believes he can see any problems that may arise and agrees to join the other kids in stealing the Eye from the High Weaver, the ultimate magic leader in town. His partners include:

---Lachlan, a really good-looking boy who can charm anyone.
---Gareth, a young man who can move anything with his hands so that he fools people and loves to research.
---Foxtail, a girl who has no face except a mask; she has stealth skills.
---Meriel, a girl with gymnastic abilities.

Callan somehow ends up being the leader of the group. They have two days because Mr. Solomon needs the Eye by the time the moons line up. Callan finally comes up with a plan. It will be dangerous and they may not survive, but they will have more money than they've ever imagined. As Gareth completes his research and Foxtail completes her surveillance, Callan sees an opening by completing a couple of cons. Can they work together? Ultimately, who can they trust?

The novel is full of adventure, danger, and intrigue. It cleverly connects myths, so pay attention to the stories told! Get ready to be stressed as things never go as they are supposed to. It's a really entertaining novel. ( )

A rather rollicking adventure. World-building is decent, characters are intriguing (especially Foxtail) and the plot zips along (despite a weird descent into backstory just before the climax which seemed ill-placed). ( )
