"From the USA Today bestselling and Edgar-nominated author of Darling Rose Gold comes a dark, thrilling novel about two sisters-one trapped in the clutches of a cult, the other in a web of her own lies-and the lengths they will go to save each other. Welcome to Wisewood. We'll keep your secrets if you keep ours. Natalie Collins hasn't heard from her sister in more than half a year. The last time they spoke, Kit was slogging from mundane workdays to obligatory happy hours to crying in the shower about their dead mother. She told Natalie she was sure there was something more out there. And then she found Wisewood. On a private island off the coast of Maine, Wisewood's guests commit to six-month stays. During this time, they're prohibited from contact with the rest of the world-no Internet, no phones, no exceptions. But the rules are for a good reason: to keep guests focused on achieving true fearlessness so they can become their Maximized Selves. Natalie thinks it's a bad idea, but Kit has had enough of her sister's cynicism and voluntarily disappears off the grid. Six months later Natalie receives from a Wisewood account a menacing e-mail threatening to reveal the secret she's been keeping from Kit. Panicked, Natalie hurries north to come clean to her sister and bring her home. But she's about to learn that Wisewood won't let either of them go without a fight"--… (mehr)

3.5 stars rounded up.

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I felt like it had a really strong beginning, middle and end, but there was too much other stuff around it that I felt like detracted from my enjoyment of the book. There was also a lot left unsaid that the reader needed to fill in the blanks, which was good (she definitely respects our intelligence) but a little frustrating at times.

That being said, I really liked being confused and trying to figure out who the unnamed chapters narrator was, and I loved Jeremiah. ( )

I loved Darling Rose Gold and had this one on my radar when I initially heard about it’s release.
This Might Hurt opens with a dark disturbing scene that held me captive throughout. Told from a place called Wisewood, where it brings all the “troubled/problem” people to hide outside of the grid.
Told from unreliable povs, sickening abuse, a cult and a family with hidden secrets…this is a book for the unscathed thriller junkie reader.

It’s not for everyone and if you require trigger warnings…well here is your warning lol. ( )

It definitely had its moments, but overall it wasn’t as good as Darling Rose Gold.

This takes place over multiple timelines and follows multiple people— at the beginning I didn’t even know who I was reading about, I just kind of had to go with it. Some of these timelines were fully engrossing, but the one that really mattered- the cult timeline- was just blah. I didn’t see why these people were as invested as they were. There wasn’t enough grooming for it to be believable.

The storyline of the life and times of the cult leader was fascinating. I really loved reading these chapters and kind of wished the whole book was just that.

Although it was kind of a let-down, I will totally read more from this author because she’s definitely talented, and both of these books had savage endings! ( )

Natalie's sister Kat left for Wisewood, a spiritualistic retreat over six months ago. Other than a cryptic email, Natalie has not heard anything from her. Puzzled over the email, and worried that Wisewood is really more of a cult than a retreat, Natalie travels to Wisewood to find her sister. Alternating with Natalie's point of view, is an unnamed girl with an abusive stepfather. When the unnamed girl is given a book about Houdini, she discovers a love for magic and spiritualism.

This book felt like something was missing. The plot was a bit weak and lacking. I did think the back and forth point of views worked very well. The unnamed girl's story was particularly interesting, as I tried to guess exactly who she was. Overall, 3 out of 5 stars. ( )

This book has a lot of story to it. I wasn't sure if I was going to finish this book after the first few chapters. The mistreatment of children isn't really something I want to read. The book focuses on some less than perfect characters who wind up on the same island with a cult like leader. How they each got where there is chronicled but confusing at times. I'm not sure if all readers had the same problem thinking the narrative of one character was actually that of another but I think that is what makes this book so entertaining.
