This is the 12th book in the Scottish crime series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan.

The Major Investigations Team from Inverness is made up of Detective Inspector Ben Forde, Detective Sergeant Hamza Khaled, Detective Constable Tyler Neish, Detective Constable Sinead Bell, and Constable David Davidson.

Tyler is recovering from his recent surgery for testicular cancer, and is still at home. Ben is in Fort William visiting Moira Corson. Logan and Shona Maguire, the pathologist, have finally taken their relationship to the next step.

They all get hauled back into grisly police work when a body is found in the car park of Millburn Academy, which happens to be the same school attended by Olivia Maximuke, the 13-year-old daughter of the drug lord Bosco Maximuke. Logan has never believed in coincidences.

As for Olivia, she went to see her friend Shona and was confessing everything about what she had done and what she was afraid of, when thugs entered the house. Both of them went missing. But that’s not all. Olivia’s mom Alexis was also missing, as was Sinead, who went to the Maximuke house to look for Alexis and didn’t return.

Both Logan and Tyler were basically freaking out about what could be happening to all of the missing, and they are all, indeed, in very much danger. But in the process of solving this crime, Logan finally figures out the identity of the Iceman, a terrifying serial killer who had preyed on the area. . . . But not without almost dying in the process.

Evaluation: This book continues to delve into the personal relationships of the team and among them. This tense and exciting series is addictive for those who appreciate thrillers. ( )
