"In Archer Mayor's Fall Guy, a body found in the trunk of a stolen car leads Joe Gunther and his team to crucial evidence in an infamous unsolved case from years past. A high-end stolen car is discovered in Vermont. A car filled with stolen items from a far-flung two stage burglary spree. But it's what is in the trunk that brings Joe Gunther and his team from the Vermont Bureau of Investigation. In the trunk is the body of burglar in question - one Don Kalfus. Complicating matters, while the body was found in Vermont, it appears he was probably killed in the next state over, New Hampshire. The task force charged with finding out why Kalfus is murdered soon faces another problem. Within the pile of stolen cell phones found in the car is evidence of a notorious unsolved child abduction case from years earlier. Now the seemingly simple case has become more complicated and deadly, leading Gunther's team to be pulled from the New Hampshire coast to near the Canadian border as they attempt to find and capture the psychopath responsible for a tangled, historical web of misery, betrayal, and loss"--… (mehr)

I enjoyed every word, this was an interesting and engrossing read! This story exposes the reader to criminal enterprises unexpected from the innocuous beginning. It’s a great read, do yourself a favor and grab a copy! ( )

A body in trunk, a flip phone, and more questions than answers
“Fall Guy” is book thirty-three in the “Joe Gunther Series.” Readers have grown to know and love the cast of character over the years, but new readers will be able to follow along as well. Any needed information about past events and complex relationships is smoothly folded into this book. Sensitive readers should know that one storyline involves sexually exploited and/or abused children. (No graphic passages or gruesome details)
Regular readers will find all the familiar characters, including Joe Gunther, Beverly Hillstrom, Lester Spinney, and Willy Kunkle. Gunther is currently the field force commander of the Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI), and he and his team are looking into the death of a thief who was found in the trunk of the car that he stole. This investigation leads to something darker, more elusive, and a lot more complicated. Something evil is going on, and nothing is at it appears to be. An old case makes an appearance in the form of a missing flip phone. There are false trails, people who are not who they seem to be, and more trouble to follow. The investigation is systematic, careful, and exhaustive.
Striking descriptions jump from the pages. There is ominousness to the region with its trees, craggy granite ledges, and Ashuelot River tumbles through the largely wild tangle. The moon robs everything it touches of color, leaving a black-and-white world; darkness approaches black hole status. Forested peaks are bigger, taller, steeper, and more threatening than Gunther’s familiar Green Mountains.
Mayor’s characters are the strength of the series. They are veterans of decades of police work and have been honed by experience. They are diverse, uncommon, and very likeable. They have feelings, flaws, quirks, and strengths; they are dedicated to finding the truth. The conversation-driven narrative is funny and casual, yet professional and focused when needed. The case is complicated; the characters are complex, and the solution is surprising.
I received a review copy of “Fall Guy” from Archer Mayor and Minotaur Books. (If readers want to see the “real life” locations such as the hills west of the Monadnock Speedway or Lake Runnemede, just go to Google Maps. They are all there.)
“Fall Guy” is now available in print, as an e-book, and on audio from independent bookstores, online booksellers, retail stores, public libraries and anywhere you get your books. ( )

Joe is called in to investigate a stolen car with a body in the trunk. The further he goes into the investigation the more twisted it becomes. Now, he is in the middle of an famous unsolved child abduction case.

I have not read any of this series and how I have missed it…I have no idea. It was a pretty dang good book. And I always love a quest. And this book is all about the quest to find the killer. I love Joe Gunter. He is smart and he has some pretty good side kick characters!

Ok y’all, this is number 33 in a series. So, once again, I ask, how many is too many? Inquiring minds want to know your thoughts!?!? I guess if the books keep selling just keep writing.

Need a good detective mystery novel…THIS IS IT!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review. ( )

What a convoluted and challenging mess this case turns out to be. Like a Hydra it keeps on creating new horrors as the head is cut off of each. The regular characters are great, the villains truly evil, and then there are the clueless. Then there is the inherent madness of two states worth of police plus our old frenemies, the FBI!
Another great read that kept me awake and reading far too late into the night!
I requested and received an advance reader e-book from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley. Thank you! ( )
