Fuyuko Irie is a freelance copy editor in her mid-thirties. Working and living alone in a city where it is not easy to form new relationships, she has little regular contact with anyone other than her editor, Hijiri, a woman of the same age but with a very different disposition. When Fuyoku stops one day on a Tokyo street and notices her reflection in a storefront window, what she sees is a drab, awkward, and spiritless woman who has lacked the strength to change her life and decides to do something about it. As the long overdue change occurs, however, painful episodes from Fuyuko's past surface and her behavior slips further and further beyond the pale. All the Lovers in the Night is acute and insightful, entertaining and engaging; it will make readers laugh, and it will make them cry, but it will also remind them, as only the best books do, that sometimes the pain is worth it.… (mehr)

A poignant and beautiful tale about a lonely young woman attempting connection in her workaday world. ( )

A nuanced novel exploring a woman's attempt to choose. Fukuyo's life is empty, save for what others have put in to it or asked of her. She is a manuscript proofreader - noble, but by definition she is reading other people's stories while having none of her own. Her peers - the same age, the same birthplace - are the only people she has to try and model herself on (though for me, they also struggle with the void but find other ways to mask it). The first half was slow, but the second half is full of beautiful insights in to our tiny moments in life and attempts to build an identity. ( )

I really enjoyed reading this book. The investigation of Fuyuko’s inner and outer life really resonated with me. I thought the structure of the book was very well done, with the flashback in the middle to her teenage years, which shed some light on her behaviors and how we get to her quiet, lonely life. I look forward to reading more by Kawakami! ( )

This novel started but slowly but soon turned into something special. Graced with a riotously surgical grip on social satire (though at times I felt out of my depth out of ignorance of Japanese culture and ways) she's beyond that a real and rugged artist, capable at any moment of slipping in or laying down an absolutely brilliant image or turn of thought. She's both a spritely humorist and a dark, deep tragedian. I intend to read all her work; might also check out her singing: she's put out three music CDs. ( )

Puzzling novel about a solitary woman heading into middle age, trying to learn about herself and the world that she never fit into. I’m sure I missed a lot, but liked it anyway. ( )
