Alice Sun has always felt invisible at her exclusive International School. She's the only scholarship student and her parents tell her they can only afford tuition for fall semester. When she starts to turn invisible, she approaches her biggest rival to develop an app to use her new gift as a way to make some money. Her whole life and identity at school starts to change when she connects with her arch-rival, Henry. Soon they become partners in crime using the app Beijing Ghost.
Alice is a character I found likable in her gruffness. ( )

Alice Sun is the only scholarship student at her elite Beijing boarding school. Alice feels threatened by the rich influential peers that surround her causing her to feel invisible. That is, until she can actually become invisible. What started as an innocent way to monetize her invisibility quickly escalates from petty crimes to felonies. How far will she go to earn the money needed for tuition?

If You Could See the Sun is a young adult fiction set in present day Beijing. Alice is a Chinese American girl who is dedicated to maintaining top marks in at her boarding school. Ann Liang’s language is a bit repetitive, driving home the importance of academics, finances, and a rivalry. Narrator Natalie Naudus fluidly transitions between characters voices, while highlighting differences between internal and external dialogue. ( )

teen fiction - Chinese scholarship student at expensive private school for wealthy English-speaking Internationals in Beijing works with her academic nemesis (and total fox, who happens to have a crush on her) to monetize her unexplained superpower of uncontrolled invisibility; things go awry. (author was born in China but grew up in Australia).

A cute romance to root for and lots of suspense! I wonder that the students couldn't jusk ask the teacher to provide the history exam, for example, translated into Mandarin for the ESL students though. ( )

I would like to start with saying that i love the cover, it is sooooo pretty. Starting this book from the beginning with Alice Sun point of view, you see how her relationship with her parents is and after they tell her the new about not having enough money things start to change. Feeling invisible is not enough until you actually are invisible. She uses her new powers to her advantage and i would have as well. It was fun to read this book, i really did enjoy it. Henry and Alice were so entertaining the perfect Academic Rivals that turn to lovers set in Beijing, I cannot say i have read a book like this. It had action and i could not stop reading along Alice journey and everything she decides to do. The first time she became invisible and went to Henry i began to laugh, the whole encounter was funny to me. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends ( )

Alice is a Chinese American girl who whose family returned to China after several years in the US. She is the only scholarship student at her elite private international school in Beijing. Surrounded by her super rich classmates, Alice has always felt invisible and pours her energy into academic achievement. Her scholarship is only partial, and her struggling parents have let her know that they don’t have enough money for her to attend beyond the current semester. Shortly after her parents drop this bomb, Alice finds that she can become intermittently and unpredictably invisible. With the help of her academic rival, Henry, who creates the app "Beijing Ghost", she monetizes this unusual ability by performing tasks and finding out secrets.
The story is fast-paced and tense, exploring themes such as economic inequality, racism, isolation and belonging. Alice is a flawed, brilliant but clueless, ambitious but relatable character and, as the stakes intensify with each task, has to make some difficult decisions about how far she will go for tuition money. It is satisfying to watch Alice find her moral center and learn to speak up for herself. If You Could See the Sun is a highly addictive, fascinating, paranormal contemporary with an exquisitely executed slow-burn rivals to lovers romance, excellent writing and a lot of depth. ( )

If You Could See The Sun, by Ann Liang, uses a supernatural invisibility power to tell a moving, realistic story about class, money, and adolescence in Beijing.

When teenage “Study Machine” Alice Sun discovers her invisibility power, she immediately puts it to use to earn money to pay her exorbitant school fees. She’ll do favors and perform secret tasks that only someone invisible could accomplish, anonymously, of course. Once Alice started getting secrets and requests of secret favors, I thought this was going to turn Gossip Girl, but there’s a uniquely Beijing flavor. No mean girls or gossipy backstabbing here, as much as ambitious high-school students willing to do anything for success.
