February 1815 Rocky Mountains, Rupert’s Land (Canada)

Really different. Takes place just after the Revolutionary War ended. Levi, a Brit and intelligence guy, follows a former enemy back to his home, where he had claimed that there was a large deposit of some kind of mineral that would win a war. Levi had to be sure how or if it might be used. When he's spotted outside the village, he's quickly taken captive, with his fate to be decided by the community. These people live within the mountain in a very large cave where they have carved apartments out. In depth story line of Audrey as a healer. After an intense series of events Levi's injured and Audrey helps him to escape to another cave where they spend a great deal of time together. Interesting read with very believable characters.

I received this book free from the author, publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Having read the first book in the Brides of Laurent series, I was eager to read A Healer's Promise. The home of the Laurent community set in a cave system in the Rocky Mountains is so interesting to read about and the author portrayed it so well that I felt like I was right there in the setting. The story is full of edge-of-the-seat action, earthquakes, regretful decisions, family and friend relationships, forgiveness, and a sweet romance. I liked how the community came together to deal with tragedy and heartache. Readers who enjoy historical romance will want to be sure to read A Healer's Promise. I listened to a library copy of the audiobook and Christina Moore did a great job telling Audrey and Levi's story. I was not required to write a review and the opinions are my own. ( )

I truly enjoyed this book. It was very unusual. The setting was very unique.
The story flowed well. The principal characters were relatively well-developed. It is hard to describe this book without giving away the story. This is not a book with Christian characters and principles. It is not at all preachy but shows how to live your faith.
I give this a 3 out of 5 star review. I do recommend this book. ( )

I love this author’s voice, writing style. This novel is heart-felt, Inspiring, and encouraging, read as characters not only battle the environment with its natural dangers but also the internal struggle, as they try to stay true to their convictions. I loved the historical backdrop and the well-developed characters and the situations they face. It’s a wonderful getaway and one that would work well for your next book club pick.

This was a very interesting historical novel set in a somewhat "hidden" French colony in Rupert's Land, a British territory in what is now central Canada. The people live isolated, in a village that is primarily situated in dwellings built in caves. They are quite suspicious of outsiders. The village healer, Audrey, is quite immediately taken by Levi, a stranger who finds their village while on a spying mission. He is captured, and Audrey fears the villagers will condemn him out of fear. She impulsively aids an abortive escape and things go downhill from there. Honesty, impulsiveness, forgiveness and reparation are the main themes.

I enjoyed this very much, though it is the second book of the Brides of Laurent series and I did find myself wishing I had read book 1 first for more background. The village itself seemed somewhat implausible and I suspect it was better explained in the first book. Overall, it was very entertaining, and I hope to be able to backtrack and read book 1 soon.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. ( )
