A riveting coming of age story, that will make you laugh, cry and root for Laura to find happiness. Laura Shirk is a normal, happy, go-lucky, little girl playing with Cabbage Patch dolls and Legos. Until she isn't. Set in the late 1980s-early 90s, a visit to her aunt and uncle's house changes everything. What follows is a nerve-racking story shedding light on child sexual abuse. As the tragedy unfolds, Laura mutters through life concealing her secret from everyone. Feeling alone and isolated, she struggles to navigate her younger years wondering if she can or will ever find happiness. Then, Laura meets 'the perfect man' for her. Can he heal her heart and break down her steel walls? The Secrets We Conceal, S.R. Fabrico's debut novel is a riveting coming of age story that beautifully conveys how love and strength can heal all wounds. "An incredible story of grit, perseverance and bravery. This story is devastating, raw and romantic in one. The Secrets We Conceal is a must-read that you can't put down." Dana Derricks, 12 - Time Award-Winning Author "As a therapist in practice for over 20 years, treating female abuse and trauma, The Secrets We Conceal is a story that countless numbers of young girls can relate to. The trauma narrative in the beginning is hard to get through, even as a trained EMDR trauma therapist. However, this story of how the universe sends love to conquer evil is a redemptive message of hope and speaks to human resilience. It is my hope that this book will land in the hands of other women who might have suffered like the main character and that they will be empowered to speak out and find their own healing. A must read for anyone that feels they are at the end of their rope. The reader will cry tears of sadness, joy and laughter at this tragically witty story where in the end love really does conquer all evil. " Sarah R. Coates, M.Ed, LCMHC, NCC "A haunting tale of innocence being stripped from a young girl, but with the power of finding confidence and self-worth. Profoundly moving while shedding light on an important social issue that every parent needs to pay attention to. A must read for any parent/care giver who wants to feel empowered to have an open conversation with their child to keep them protected or allowing them to have a voice." SDC, mother of a young pre-teen daughter "S.R. Fabrico has created a book where we can find unexpected messages about ourselves and the world around us. I resonated with the main character, Laura, and the journey that she overcame. Her story is full of moments that change lives and while my story is different from hers, there are commonalities that brought pain yet also brought the feeling that I could share my journey and struggles. I cried, laughed, and loved this book, it is a must read!" M.W., Survivor… (mehr)

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Secrets We Conceal by S.R. Fabrico is a book about sexual abuse. I have to admit that at times, reading this story actally made me sick. Family and those we love are suppose to protect us from predators out there. Laura was a happy child, wanting to visit her cousin, but if she had only known what would happen, maybe she would have stayed home. Fabrico does a fabulous job writing this book, being sensitive to those who have dealt with this subject. I like the way she talks about abusive relationships in a way that doesn’t blame the thr one hurt. One thing I hope this book does is to encourage and help those who have been abused to speak out. Find someone you trust and talk to them.

I, like others have said had many emotions reading this book. From sickness to stress, from anxiety to depression, I would just sometimes stop and cry. But this story needs to be heard. And I hope something I have said helps someone somewhere, or maybe helps a reader get the news out about this issue. I plan to see what I can do to help others. I encourage you to read this book. It’s not the best reading material, but it into the hands of others could change someone’s life. I’m giving this Five out of Five Stars!!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 ( )

The Secrets We Conceal is a great debut novel by the talented S R Fabrico. First off, I want to warn readers that this book deals with some heavy issues that could be triggering for some. I could understand Laura right from the start. I could see myself in her and relate with her. I was rooting for her to find the happiness that she so deserved. She is one that could inspire so many readers on how she was able to deal with the trauma she experienced as a young girl and followed her throughout her life. Those who have dealt with such trauma do not understand the long lasting effects it has many. The author perfectly portrays this issue in Laura. While reading, I was often having to grab my tissues at times. It is a story that played a lot on my emotions and could not put it down.

The Secrets We Conceal will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoyed reading fiction that deals with real life and difficult issues. I will most definitely be looking for more books written by S R Fabrico in the future. I would love to see where else their talents will take their readers to next.

I received a paperback copy of The Secrets We Conceal from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion. ( )

Wow.
I rarely read a book with disturbing subject matter, but every once in a great while I get sucked in anyway. That was the case with The Secrets We Conceal. The prologue is only two pages, but that’s all it took to pull me in and glue me to the story.

To be totally honest, there were times I didn’t think I could continue reading. It’s a tragic story and empathy oozed from every pore of my body. Being based on a true story and knowing there are many others with similar experiences made it more than a story. It was an experience. I couldn’t stop reading and finished in one sitting.

There are so many layers to this book. I experienced countless emotions, and I’m glad I persevered through the difficult parts because it made reaching the rewarding parts all the sweeter.

I don’t want to reveal too much, so I’ll end this review by saying this story is wrapped together in as much beauty, strength, tenderness, and romance as it is in tragedy and pain. I’d dare say you’ll be changed by reading it. Greatly.

Disclosure: #CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book.
