Everett Ramses came into my life like a hurricane on a dark New Orleans night. With a deep voice and penetrating gaze, his mere presence tingled my nerves and twisted my insides much like the city's legendary stories of spirits and ghosts. As the ruler of New Orleans, Everett Ramses lives life hard and takes what he wants without apology. He wants me to be his queen. I am not an unwilling capture or a damsel in distress. No, I, Emma North, willingly fell for the man who proclaims himself the devil. Do I follow through on the promise I made to Rett, or do I listen to my own instincts and run before it's too late? The future of New Orleans is now in my hands. I have been eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this duet. What I wasn't expecting was the complete beguiling from this author. Even more so than the first book, this one took me on a journey. there is a richness to this story and the way that it is written is nothing short of spectacular.
I think one of my favorite things about this book was the character growth. I liked watching these characters navigate into uncharted territory and have to experience new feelings. That was pretty powerful to see how that worked with characters that were dynamic in the first place but only seemed even more extraordinary in this book. Rhett is dreamy but in this book, it was Emma that stole the show.
I loved the feel of this story and how the history of New Orleans, including the supernatural feel, to come alive. It felt like another character almost and my love for this city grew even more. I especially loved the surprise twist at the end and how a certain person played into that connection. I found it fitting considering the locale. I am a firm believer in all things like those that occurred and found myself not the least bit surprised or think it was too far out there.
My only reason for this not being a perfect book was the way things concluded with Kyle. I expected more of that mystery to be solved or handled. That part of the story felt like it was missing something. I cannot say more without spoilers but will leave it at my being disappointed.
I highly recommend this book and hope that the magic of this duet and city with phenomenal characters resonates the way that it did for me. ( )
