William Seymour grows up on shipboard in the Royal Navy, after his father is hanged during the mutiny at the Nore (1797), and later, he is impressed into the crew of a daring smuggler. This amusing and exciting novel blends in the classic true tale of an English captain who deliberately lost his frigate on a lee shore, in order to wreck a French line-of-battle ship. Marryat's writing followed notable examples of the sea-story genre byDaniel Defoe and Sir Walter Scott. In turn, his writing influenced HermanMelville and Joseph Conrad. What made Marryat different than some of theaforementioned writers was that he lived the adventures about which hewrote.
Leon Howard's biography of Herman Melville credits Captain Marryat'swriting as having influenced the author of Moby Dick to first go to sea.
