Ben is not your typical hero. He’s quiet, shy, extremely afraid of bugs, and very observant. But, underneath that shy exterior is a passionate, talented guy, if only he believed in himself more. Stuck in a dead end job, he’s grown comfortable with the known. He’s a wicked talented artist, but doesn’t want to put his passion out there for all to scrutinize. He’s secretly pined for Allie, the Grocery Girl for months and when he finally gets the opportunity to talk with her, there’s an instant connection.
Ben really gets Allie and vice versa. But when Allie’s old ex-boyfriend comes back and her mother is pressuring her to get married, he offers to be her fake boyfriend. This causes all sorts of angst as Allie only wants friendship and Ben wants more. All seems to be moving in a positive direction, until a misunderstanding threatens to tear them apart.
Allie is sensitive, a pleaser, and wants to be a writer. She’s stuck in a publishing job where her talents aren’t appreciated. When she’s turned down for a promotion, the cute guy she’s been eyeing at the grocery store offers her true comfort and friendship. As she and Ben get to know one another, Allie feels like she finally understands what a best friend is. Ben is a dream. He makes her homemade hot chocolate, gives her space and time when she needs it, helps her realize her dream, and really gets her. But, she doesn’t want to depend on a man again. She wants to stand on her own, but also wants their fake relationship to be real. When all that seems threatened, Allie has to decide whether she can get along even without Ben.
I loved this romance! Not only are there plenty of laugh out loud moments with laser tag, Halloween ninja turtle attacks, skinny jeans, and witty banter, but the characters both go through massive growth. They both have relatable flaws and strengths that need to be explored. I enjoyed Allie finally trusting herself and Ben finally sharing his talents and learning to stand up for himself. I also loved how they were truly best friends. And don’t discount the amazing friendships of the Wonder Boys. Kit, Oliver, Cam and Madi are all there supporting and cheering Ben on. Thanksgiving and the tree house were amazing!
This is definitely one romcom you’ll want to add to your TBR list! The whole series is a must read. Now I can’t wait for Cam’s adventure! (
