Ronan, once the archangel Remiel, chose to fall from Heaven after breaking angelic law. For centuries, he lived and worked among humans as a bounty hunter. An encounter with the mysterious mage Alice Worth in the so-called Broken World forced him to violate angelic law once more to save millions of lives. Cut off from his kin with his wings and power bound, Ronan is a man without a reason to live. Arkady Woodall left a dangerous job at the Vampire Court to return to the profession she loves most: PI. Now she's Alice's business partner, and for the first time in years she's calling her own shots. Most of all she wants to find Ronan, who'd shown up in Alice's yard beaten nearly to death and then vanished again as soon as he'd recovered. Sparks fly when Ronan and Arkady cross paths and stumble upon a kidnapping in progress. What starts as a rescue turns into a deadly mystery that sends them on a chase from the city's most depraved depths to its grandest penthouses. When their shared addiction to danger sets them against a powerful enemy, Ronan and Arkady realize their only hope of survival is each other, but a devastating secret might spell doom for them both . . . I loved this book! It caught me from the first page and just kept going. This book ties in with the Alice Worth series, and it tells you that at the beginning of the book. I wish I had read the Alice Worth series first, because I would understood world the book is set in better, as characters and events from the prior series are referenced in this one, and I like to read series in order. However, that being said, the book stood well on its own. I loved the characters, and I cared about what happened to them. I hope there are more books with these characters going forward. I’d like to read more about their story. I am also going to go back and read the Alice Worth series of books, and then re-read this one. It was a quick read, and I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

This book is a lot to take in if you have not read the Alice Worth series (which I did not but wish I had). Previous books allow you to meet characters and learn the world building that are essential to this book. Reading this as a standalone I was intrigued by the plot line and suspense, but feel I missed out as far as character relationships and growth. Arkady and Ronan were stubborn and arrogant, always one upping each other. I suppose this helped amplify the steam level, but also came across as annoying and immature. There was more on the side of arguing instead of banter. Although the story plot was intriguing it starts out very slow. However, I was entertained and plan to go back and read the origin of Alice Worth to get some perspective on these characters. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. ( )

Mortal Heart by Lisa Edmonds.
Exiled former archangel Ronan and Arkady Woodall, private investigator and business partner of Alice Worth, team up to track down the supernatural beings behind a human trafficking ring. Arkady and Ronan are both suitably kick-ass, and they're a good team. I liked how they snarked at each other. There was insta-lust, almost insta-love, misunderstandings in the way of both, and graphic sex. I'd say it's not absolutely necessary to have read the main Alice Worth series before this, but it definitely helps. Reviewed from an eBook copy received through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer Program in return for an unbiased review.

A spinout from the author's existing world. The Hero and Heroine had apparently had bit parts to play in the earlier books and now have a novel of their own. It works well enough as a standalone and is a good introduction to the complexities of the more complete universe.

Ronan is a Fallen Angel (part of his Fall see the other books I think), and he's been cursed/punished to a mortal body to try to redeem himself, but he's currently not that bothered. He still retains a few of his angelic graces, but not as much or everything that he's used to. More than sufficient to manage a couple of low-life demon slaves who seem to be part of a woman trafficking ring. He's about to obtain enough information to shatter than complete thing, but he realises someone else is also investigating them. A very sassy fully mortal woman, Arkady. One of the slight bits of discontinuity is that he seems to have no memory of her at all, but had apparently spent several weeks with her at Alice's house. Ditto the ghost - this one is particularly annoygin because later inthe book he's fully cognizant of Michael. Together they team up, and go hunting for the Vampire that seems to be relishing in the girl's pain.

Fast paced, graphic sex, don't think too hard about it and it's great fun. The characters have a sparkly chemistry that works well, dour Ronan and Sassy Arkady always ready with a come-back. Will investifate hte rest of the world ( )

Ronan is a fallen angel. He chose to fall from Heaven after breaking angelic law to save human lives. After choosing to help Alice Worth to save millions more, he is condemned to live a mortal life. Arkady Woodall left a dangerous job at the Vampire Court and is now private investigator Alice’s business partner. She has been searching for Ronan since he was found in Alice’s yard beaten nearly to death and then disappeared as soon as he was well enough.
As soon as she finds Ronan, the two of them uncover a human trafficking ring. Working together they investigate some of the most powerful, and dangerous, denizens of the supernatural world. Secrets from both their pasts threaten not only their investigation, but their developing feelings for each other, and even their lives.
This is the first book in a companion series to the Alice Worth urban fantasy/romance series. Although it is not necessary to have read the earlier series, it does help in understanding the author’s world building and knowing some of the other characters. This book is quite fun. Arkady is a strong and capable character. The dialogue between the two main characters is full of humour and snark. Both characters crave danger and excitement, so the book is full of magic and adventure. The sex scenes in the book are fairly graphic, but not excessive. I enjoyed this book, perhaps even more than some of the Alice Worth books since Arkady is such a fun and confident character. Recommended for readers who enjoy paranormal romance and urban fantasy.
