With this book, Richard McGarry has taken a treasure of Key West history - the World War I waterfront passes that now are preserved at the Monroe County Public Library's Florida Keys History Center - and made them into art, while also expanding on the stories they tell. The passes themselves, including high-quality photos of everyone from a vice consul to stevedores, are haunting artifacts of that time in Key West. With his paintings and also the stories from that time period, McGarry illuminates the humanity of those people from a century ago and expands our understanding of this endlessly alluring rock at the end of the road. Before Key West became the famous resort town it is today, it was a very different place. This book provides a peek-hole into what island life was really like a century ago through the portraits and personal stories of ordinary and mostly forgotten "Conchs"--what native Key Westers call themselves. The significant historical figures that only passed through the island but are the focus of traditional Key West histories, like Henry Flagler and Ernest Hemingway, are only mentioned in relation to each local's tale. And every story begins with their World War 1 waterfront security pass. The passes were issued in 1918 by the U.S. Navy, and each has a name, home address, occupation, and a small ID photo. Historical photographs throughout also complement the stories. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
