The audio series of "Top Ten Short Stories" includes several collections, each of which focuses on stories from a particular time frame, country, gender, or genre. This selection of English- language stories from the 1920s has a number of top-notch stories, plus a few items of lesser quality. All are well-rendered by skilled narrators.

Stories that I found to be particularly fine include Fitzgerald's "Bernice Bobs Her Hair", Glasgow's "The Difference", Anderson's "Brothers", and Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game". Two of these are old favorites of mine -- the ones authored by Fitzgerald and by Connell, and I was pleased at how the narration enhanced their qualities. I found Ellen Glasgow's "The Difference" (which I'd not heard of before) to be a delightful surprise. Zane Grey's "The Great Slave" (of which I'd also not known) I found to be powerful, if disturbing. At the lower extreme was Lovecraft's "The Color Out of Space", which struck me as very dated and inadequate in the author's attempt to scare his readers. After a full century of science fiction, it will strike experienced readers as silly and tiresome. The short story "Spurs" is as unpleasant a tale as I've read, and I have given it the lowest possible rating. This story is of historical interest -- it's said to have spawned the famous noir movie "Freaks". However, any similarities are superficial and confined to the fact that both involve characters from a circus sideshow.
