Starfall Point has its own coven, and this book 2 in the series tells the second witch Caroline’s story and brings romance into her life. Another witch, generations ago, have cursed Caroline’s family so that none can leave the island without dying within 24 hours. So the goal, of course, is to find a way to break the curse. This second novel in the Starfall Point series revolves around Caroline, her family, her family's history, and her childhood love. Caroline's family hits a little too close to home as they take her loyalty and work ethic for granted while gaslighting her complaints. I love it when authors show fractured genetic families and emphasize the importance of found family in such situations. Ms. Harper does an excellent job of showing how Caroline can still feel loyal to her parents and brother but consider her coven her true family.
Another aspect I loved about BIG WITCH ENERGY is that Caroline and Ben are older than Ms. Harper's previous characters. Both are over forty and carry the baggage that accumulates through age and experience. In particular, watching Ben navigate the trickiness of teenage children was particularly amusing. I could easily see my teenage daughter in Mina. I could feel his exasperation because I'd been there.
I like that Ms. Harper makes these two older and more experienced. Not only are they closer to my age, but the years between their breakup matter and make a big difference in how they approach each other. That awkwardness is more realistic because of their baggage and their experiences. Also, getting back together can only occur through a maturing of attitudes and a better understanding of how relationships work. Ms. Harper understands that and uses that knowledge to create Ben and Caroline.
As always, Amanda Ronconi and Teddy Hamilton are excellent narrators. Their voices work well together. Plus, they understand Ms. Harper's characters. Teddy captures Ben's nervousness and frustrations. Meanwhile, Amanda has been voicing Ms. Harper's characters for so long that she knows what emotion to add, when to add it to her voice, and how much to add. Their narrations are to Ms. Harper's novels as frosting is to cake, taking something good and making it great.
It is no secret that I love everything Molly Harper writes. It helps that I find all her stories charming and entertaining. She is an author whose novels make me feel good, taking me away from reality for a short time, and allowing me to delight in her characters' antics. BIG WITCH ENERGY has the bonus of slightly older main characters to whom I can more directly relate. BIG WITCH ENERGY certainly made me want more of Starfall Point and lament the year it will be before Ms. Harper releases the next book. ( )
