By Sarah E. Macausland on April 15, 2007 Format: Paperback If you would like guidance on how to improve your group or team in your business or organization, this book is excellent. Caroline Brem does an excellent job of explaining the vital communication skills necessary to build a good team. It is very well written and I think one of the reasons this book is so helpful is because Brem is a teacher and a trainer in the communications field. She has first hand experience in this topic and I think it helped me become more intrigued when reading her book because of her familiarity with communication in teams. I think her book is very organized in the way it is set up, which makes it easy for people to read. Each chapter is set up similarly and I think this is helpful for readers because it creates an easy reading format. Every chapter discusses the necessary communication skills to improve upon in each stage of a team. I think Brem does an excellent job of explaining each chapter because at the beginning of each chapter she attempts to relate the topics to something the reader can understand. She explains things very thoroughly and she even breaks some difficult aspects of communication down so the reader can better understand it. I really enjoyed reading this book because Brem really goes into depth in each of the chapters. She explains each stage and the communication skills or possible problems of each stage meticulously so when finished reading, the reader is not confused. Another aspect of the book that I really enjoyed was her use of examples. In most of the chapters Brem sets up a hypothetical situation and goes into depth on the communication that exists in each of those circumstances. I think this really helps people to relate to working in teams and also helps them apply what they have learned in this book to their existing teams. Overall, Brem set up this book very well and she explained everything in great detail. When I finished reading this book, I felt that I had learned a lot more about communication in teams. I think I am now able to effectively work in groups and teams. This is not only a book for businesses that are reinventing themselves, as the publisher indicates, but I think this book can be intended towards individuals who are looking to improve their group communication skills in their daily lives.
In the 1990s most businesses are moving towards reinventing themselves in teams. In this book Caroline Brem offers some guidance on how to make teams work. The secret is good communication: listening, speaking assertively, building empathy, building co-operation, resolving conflict. Using a structure which follows the life of a group, from birth to death, the book explains all the communication skills necessary to negotiate the tricky situations which inevitably arise in the brave new world of self-directed work teams.
