Simply listen to enjoy 2. Lesson on Asian culture Media: Water color Review: The author uses completely fictional characters and events. Yet, the reader can easily relate to occurences within the book. Events and characters are easily related because of the realistic characterisics but the reader is aware of the events being unreal. Setting: The author directly states the location of the setting, therefore he was very specific. Yet, when it comes to the time-frame of the book it is background information, which is very background. The reason why the authors description is important is because the author is able to find a balance between giving specific information and background information. A version of the story associated with the 18th century blue willow pattern on plates made for the English market. The afterword explains that there are certain basic elements in the legend and that Pam Conrad wrote her story when her daughter was discovering young love and so emphasized the need and difficulty of parents' letting go. The father is willing to give his daughter anything as long this does not involve her leaving him. SPOILER: His actions end in her doing something foolish (how was she to know, since she never had the opportunity to learn?) and she dies. When the man she loves realizes this, his grief sounds so much like a wild animal that villagers, searching for a rumored leopard, shoot him. The father, who has learned his lesson too late, makes plates with their story and shares them with the world. Media: Acrylic, pastel and mixed media Genre: realistic fiction This is a good example of realistic fiction because all the compenents of the story are realistic. There aren't any magical or unexplainable events that take place. The main character Kung Shi Fair falls in love with Chang the Good and the story follow them trying to convince her father to let them get married. They are patient and try to encourage the father but in the end Kung Shi Fair feels that her father will never agree. The protagonist, Kung Shi Fair, is a round character. We hear her desires and feelings towards things in the story. We discover that she is caring and comitted. She is the character that goes through the most growth due to the relationship with Chang the Good. In the end she feels there is no way her father will give his blessing so she sets sail on the boat to run off with Chang. She will do anything for love. Genre: Legend/Folk Tale Media: acrylic, pastel, and mixed media on Arches rag paper Plot: person against society Age Appropriateness: primary Characterization: Kung Shi Fair was a round dynamic character. At the beginning of the book we learn about her life style, her family, and how she views the world. As she meets Chang the Good she changes and falls in love and her ideals and priorities change. She realizes that all she wants is to marry Chang. Review: This is a good example of legend/folk tale. At the end of the book it talks about how the Blue Willow plates were supposedly designed after this story (although in reality the story was inspired by the plates. This story is believable and could have happened. There was a great deal of research into the Chinese culture in order to write this book which makes it believable.
