This is a real fan-book for aficionadoes of TV series 'The Waltons'. The author of the books on which it was based - and later massively involved in the televising of it- provides a potted autobiography of his childhood in Virginia (with lots of b/w pics) and his post-college life as a writer. He tells of the process of getting the series going (after initially making a movie of it) and its huge popularity- despite predictions of failure.
There then follows a synopsis of every single episode- again with photos and comments from those involved. While I really enjoyed the show, it has to be said that the plotlines, once reduced to a few sentences, DO sound frightfully scmaltzy, featuring, as they do, deaf foundlings, Elizabeth's dead raccoon etc! Better watched than read about.
Hamner finishes off with a look at the 'Walton's Mountain' tourist centre in his hometown of Schuyler. Here too it does go on a bit for the non-Schuyler resident, as he recites lists of local families, men who died in the War etc.
So only for the most serious fan. But contains everything the fan could desire! ( )

As a long time fan of the Walton's, I found this book a must read. Starts with the history of the real family the show was based on and then gives a episode snapshot of each show. It was interesting that many thought the show would never make it. In the disappointing reality tv era we are in now, it is refreshing to watch a show that not only tells a story, but teaches a lesson as well. Reading about the actors bringing to life these stories was quite interesting. If you love the Walton's, read this book. ( )
