Even though John Steptoe did not illustrate this book I loved how the illustrations flowed with the text. However, John Steptoe’s style was beautiful in this text. I like how he makes you feel like you are the character in the story. I love how he writes stories with beautiful themes on friendships and family. One thing I didn’t noticed however was an illustration of a bait or even an mention of a bear at all. In 3 of John Steptoe’s books he mentioned or illustrated an image of a bear. I loved the book it was nicely written. ( )

There are several reasons as to why I like this book. One reasons I like this book is the great depiction of the characters. For instance, the main characters name was Charlie. Charlie seemed to be in late elementary school or early middle school. The actions and the words of the characters were realistic to his age group. Which can help children around his age relate to the story. Another reasons I like this book is because the story allows readers to broaden their perspectives on other cultures. To further explain, in the beginning Charlie was taken back by Hector (Puerto Rican boy), who had darker skin but was not the same ethnicity as him. By the end of the book, Charlie adopted him as a friend. Charlie understood the differences but, also seen the similarities between them. The overall message of the book was to explain “you may have more things in common than different with someone that does not look like you”. ( )

A young boy named Charles is amazed to find out that the new student, Hector, is from Puerto Rico. He had assumed that didn't have people who look like that there. Charles takes Hector under his wing and gets him acclimated to life in a very different place. This story promotes curiosity , finding the connections in ethnic history, and helping those in need. The watercolor illustrations by E.B. Lewis are classy and soothing. ( )

Hector is starting his first day of school. He is from Puerto Rico and speaks Spanish and a little English. Charles, a kid in his class, volunteered to show him around. He was very eager to know more about where Hector is from and why he looks so much like him. His mom, the teacher, and his dad all taught him that his culture was also associated with Hector's. When Hector was being picked on for looking different, Charles stood up for him. I believe the character was a genuinely a nice person, so if any change happened it would to gain friendship. His curiosity to learn more about Hector's culture caused him to be better understanding of Hector's situation. ( )

This was truly a great book. The main characters don't understand why they are different....because they look the same. They also want to help the other assimilate and help against the bullies. People should be brought to the understanding that judging people based on their ethnicity is WRONG.
