Biography & Autobiography. Politics. True Crime. Nonfiction. HTML:

The "uncommonly trenchant account of the only known FBI agent to confess to murder" (Kirkus Reviews).
When rookie FBI agent Mark Putnam received his first assignment in 1987, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream, if not the most desirable location. Pikeville, Kentucky, is high in Appalachian coal country, an outpost rife with lawlessness dating back to the Hatfields and McCoys. As a rising star in the bureau, however, Putnam soon was cultivating paid informants and busting drug rings and bank robbers. But when one informant fell in love with him, passion and duty would collide with tragic results.

A coal miner's daughter, Susan Smith was a young, attractive, struggling single mother. She was also a drug user sometimes described as a con artist, thief, and professional liar. Ultimately, Putnam gave in to Smith's relentless pursuit. But when he ended the affair, she waged a campaign of vengeance that threatened to destroy him. When at last she confronted him with a shocking announcement, a violent scuffle ensued, and Putnam, in a burst of uncontrolled rage, fatally strangled her.

Though he had everything necessary to get away with murderâ??a spotless reputation, a victim with multiple enemies, and the protection of the bureau's impenetrable shieldâ??his conscience wouldn't allow it. Tormented by a year of guilt and deception, Putnam finally led authorities to Smith's remains. This is the story of what happened before, during, and after his startling confessionâ??an account that "should take its place on the dark shelf of the best American true crime" (Newsday).

I was given a copy of an ARC of above Suspicion by Joe Sharkey for an honest review. I would like to thank Open Road Integrated Media as well as NetGalley and the author. I do find it a privilege to be able to read things in advance. When I choose this book on Negalley all I knew about it was that it was true crime, and that was really all I needed to know. I find it fascinating that there are many authors who are able to translate truth on paper and Mr Sharkey does a really good job making this a page turner that makes you feel sorry for Susan and Mark.
The story is about the tragic Case where an FBI agent kills his pregnant girlfriend who started as his informant. I think the story is beautifully put together and I feel sorry for everyone involved. I personally had a hard time starting the book but once you get going it’s a smooth ride. I think where things go wrong for Susan is that through the book it really does read like she is head over heels in lust with Mark. Poor Mark all he really wanted to do was find a place to call his own so he can make a name for himself in the FBI. This was a truly heartbreaking read but worth the time if you are a lover of true crime. Mark did not have to confess but he is ruined by killing Susan. He loses thirty pounds. Every time his boss calls him in for a meeting he thinks here it comes. It is really no way to live. He was released from prison in 2000 and is living in the south with his two kids. I look forward to seeing how this translates to the big screen in 2017! Well done.

This was excellent coverage of an FBI agent who tried to play by the book, but as a rookie was thrown into a corrupt little town that had their law enforcement just the way they wanted it. Mark Putnam did all of the things he was taught to do but ended up a criminal who lost everything.

This is the second such story I have read about in the last month where law enforcement who use C.I.'s or confidential informants create relationships that are bound to end badly for someone. Generally, it is the rule-followers and those who put their faith in a fallible system.

Mark Putnam was a rare person who did not lose his conscience in the end. He was not power-hungry or greedy. If he was he could have risen to the highest offices of trust in the land.

The writing was good, but due to space and time some of the characters like Mark's wife who since passed away, and several of the other players had to be left hanging and without resolution.

It is a good read unless you are a little too familiar with the type of corruption and greed in this story. Then, it is a reminder that positions of trust are often a stepping stone of evil.

I will recommend this for readers advisories.

This book set a new record for me - I abandoned it after 4 pages, and I will usually give a book 50 pages to get me interested.

Paragraphs unrelated to each other. Is this description? action? character introduction? Pretty much all of those, flip-flopping all over the place. Felt like it'd been written by 5 different people. I wasn't hooked, didn't care, and chose not to waste my time.

My rating is zero stars.
