An interesting collection of essays on Deir el Medina, the workmen's village near the Valley of the Kings. Not earth-shattering new discoveries, but it included some interesting new research on previously excavated finds. None of the essays are comprehensive -- this isn't a summation of work on Deir el Medina, but rather several scholars' delvings into particular aspects of that village and cemetery. Some of the essays, like Ward's, would probably only excite a specialist, but others, like those on religion and magic, would likely be of broader interest. Pharaoh's Workers focuses on the archaeological site at Deir el Medina on the west bank of the Nile at Luxor. The workers who prepared the royal tombs and lived there in what has been called "the earliest known artists' colony" left a rich store of artifacts and documents through which we can glimpse not only their working conditions and domestic activities, but also their religious beliefs and private thoughts.
