"In the Fall of 1991, a magical seed was planted in the heart of New York's Harlem. It was the Frederick Douglass Academy, a public school that promised inner-city students a quality eduction comparable to that offered in an elite suburban school. Founded and led by Dr. Lorraine Monroe, an already fabled educator, and staffed by a team of deeply dedicated teachers, the academy set out to prove that caring instructors, an atmosphere of disciplined creativity, and a refusal to accept mediocrity can transform the lives of inner-city kids." "Six years later, the academy and its students are thriving. Members of the first graduating class are on their way to Ivy League colleges, and students in the lower grades continue to set records for academic excellence. Parents from all over Harlem fight to win their children a coveted seat in the academy's incoming class." "The key to the success of the Frederick Douglass Academy is leadership - especially the unique brand of tough yet compassionate, practical, charismatic leadership pioneered by the principal, Lorraine Monroe. Now, in Nothing's Impossible, Monroe tells her own remarkable story and explains the philosophy that has made her one of America's most effective community leaders."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Lorraine Munroe has been a teacher, Principal and an Administrator. This is an inspirational read about how to be a leader in the most difficult circumstances. Munroe runs by the Munroe Doctrine which is scattered through the book with sayings like 'when you work in a place where your efforts are belittled, save yourself-leave! But until you leave, continue to do impeccable work. Otherwise, you become like your detractors.' or daily reflection on your efforts and outcomes will improve both.' She writes of her life and experiences that have made her the person she is today. Her work with lower socio-economic schools and under-achieving students is documented with her beliefs of mediocrity is not accepted and discipline and creativity in the classroom can transform learning. Man can do anything he sets his mind on. Monroe becomes the new principal of a black getto school in the suburbs of NY. Where student performance is way below average and mentality is likewise. She decides to turn the value system around. Instead of the loser model these kids have become accustomed of, she reignites their deep sense off inner worth and contribution. Step by step the human spirit as it can shine in all its beauty reveals itself. Although not its main focus, the grading average of the school climbs to reach the top of NY. To read this is awe inspiring. It made me proud to know what man can do. ( )
