Sweet little poems will sure warm the heart. This was not for me though since I am actually terrified of birds. ( ) School Library Journal Grades 1-5--A fine collection. Many of the poets' names will be familiar-Eleanor Farjeon, Carl Sandburg, Robert Louis Stevenson, Elizabeth Coatsworth, Margaret Wise Brown, Rachel Field-but some are not as well known, and several selections are by anonymous authors. While most of the pieces focus on wild birds, Kiesler has included one about a young girl's pet parakeet and two fanciful pieces-an anonymously written poem about a pirate's parrot and an excerpt from Edward Lear's "The Pelican Chorus." Many of the impressionist full- and double-page oil paintings show charming rural and pastoral scenes, and often include children playing and observing nature. Others feature close-ups of the birds mentioned in the accompanying text. While this is not a first purchase, librarians on the lookout for short, topical anthologies will want to consider it.
