Basement locking cabinet

Following a very brief introduction, the main body of this book is given over to the 44 individual predominantly New Mexico artists of the early twentieth century. Each artist has two or three pages allocated, and one or two examples of work. Occasionally an artist will have considerably more; Gerald Cassidy has ten pages and seven images; Edgar Payne, Carl Redin and Norma Bassett Hall six pages each. The entry for each artist briefly discusses his work and influences.

All the images are full page size, many of them bleed on two sides; there are 53 full-colour and about 21 duo-tone pictures, the latter comprising drawings or prints. In addition there are several unidentified sepia-tone photographs, presumably to provide a sense of place. The book is well laid out with imaginative typography, although the font size selected for the text is quite large, and the choice of a sans face perhaps not the best for the often wide text area. The paintings include the familiar and the less familiar.

The book (ISBN 971915075 hard cover, ISBN 971915083 soft cover, ISBN 971915091 limited edition) measures 9.25" x 11.25", landscape format, and has 154 pages; it is well produced and with good colour printing. ( )
