Why didn't I buy this book years ago? It contains fantastic information on police procedures, crime scene investigations, and how criminals are processed. It's peppered with Lofland's own stories from his decades in law enforcement, plus commentary from many other officers. The book acknowledges opportunities and incidents of abuse and errors. One big downside: the book was published in 2007 and is out of print. I really wish a new version would come out, addressing changes in technology and procedures. ( )

This book is for every reader who ever wondered if what they saw on that television show or read in that crime thriller was really the way police officers work.

All the details are here; the author’s nearly two decades in law enforcement makes this a crime-fighting reference like no other. There are charts, illustrations, and photographs that run the gamut from defensive moves to autopsies. Want to know about officer training, the tools police officers use, or crime scene investigation techniques? They’re all included here.

Although the targeted audience for this book is the writer, readers with an interest in police procedures and investigations will find much to appreciate here.

Highly recommended. ( )

This book had a lot of practical and easy to understand information. The only drawback to the Kindle version of this book is that it doesn't have a direct link to the electronic Table of Contents. That makes it difficult to jump to a specific section without using the bookmark to get back to the index. Overall, I thought it was a great resource. ( )
