Thomas Jefferson: Man on a Mountain by Natalie S. Bober is an extremely well written and documented book of Jefferson’s life. It portrays the man and his family as people who did what needed to be done for the best of all mankind. The book shows that Peter Jefferson, Thomas’s father, was a remarkable self-taught individual who cared for his family and friends. And, it shows that Thomas Jefferson emulated his father in many ways, and he wanted to grow up like him, as a man willing to learn as much as possible.
The book also tells of Jefferson’s accomplishments through is life: politically as well as, family. Also, the different forms of educational institutions and tutors he had. Jefferson was human and the book tells of his fears, drawbacks, and embarrassments in life.
Slavery was part of Jefferson’s life. The author, Bober, tells of Jefferson’s hope that slavery would end soon, yet he continued to keep his own slaves. However, he did release Sally Hemmings’s children as he promised her, after making sure they had the skills to support themselves financially. The book shows that Peter Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson treated their slaves with respect and felt responsible for their safety.
This book is a great book for facts as well as good reading material. ( )
