Charlotte Zolotow's poetry book Seasons are about a child's year and the different seasons throughout the year. This poetry book has many beautiful illustrations on every page. There is much concrete language, imagery, and rhyming throughout this poetry book. This would be considered an easy poetry book and would be a great book to use to introduce poems to children. ( )

For this book, I would use it as a read aloud to introduce seasons to a first-grade class. After reading each of the poems, I would have the children use description words to tell how they see the seasons. Then, with assistance, we would create their own poems about the four seasons and make them into a seasons poem book. For second-grade, I would do the same thing but allow them to write the poems without assistance.

I liked this poem book. The main idea was about the seasons and elements that make each season. I liked how the poems followed a child’s view point of each season. The child explained the weather elements of each season as well as holidays and family poems. One of the personal poems of the child I enjoyed is called “My Shadow.” It showed how a child enjoys the light and having someone around. For example, “That’s why when the sun is out, I’m never quite alone.” The illustrations are also an interesting component to the book. The colors follow the cool tones of winter into the colors of each season. The pictures are drawn using lines to create the backgrounds such as: towns, beaches, and people. This was a nice poem collection and I do like the interesting set up of the works. ( )

This poetry book includes four sections, each one containing poems from one of the four seasons. The book contains different types and lengths of poems, though all of the poems should be easily understood by early elementary students. The poem could be read aloud all at once, or could possibly by read over the course of a unit on seasons.
