When Parsifal, a handsome and charming magician, dies suddenly, his widow Sabine--who was also his faithful assistant for twenty years--learns that the family he claimed to have lost in a tragic accident is very much alive and well. I really liked this book. I found that I was drawn into the story immediately and curious to continue it, every time I put it down. I was happily surprised, because when I picked it up and read the summary, I was thinking it would be a depressing book with people in situations that were equally depressing. That said, it is a little depressing, but yet I was drawn by how the characters ended up being lifelines to each other.
Sabine had a rather charmed life, in a way. She had a loving and supportive family. By chance she became the Assistant for Magician Parsifal, and through that is exposed to travel and wonder. She accepts loving him, and realizing that he will never return her love physically. Parsifal, his partner and she all coexist in surprising harmony. When Parsifal's partner dies, he insists they marry, not only for companionship, but also to ensure that Sabine will be taken care of. That changes when Parsifal dies unexpectedly. Sabine thought she knew Parsifal, only to find that he had hidden much of his early life. Through a dream, Sabine realized she shouldn't turn her back on his past and his family . What unfolds is a story of healing. ( )

I was simply disappointed at the abruptness of the ending Or I might’ve given at five stars. 4 1/2 would be perfect. ( )

I think I made it to about 20%.

1. I didn't like getting facts from dead people. Our MC would go to sleep and have conversations with dead people which reveal things to her (and us) that we wouldn't otherwise know. It's not presented as a fantasy story or even magical realism so I feel like it's a cockadoodie cheat.

2. I didn't understand the love our MC had for the deceased man. I don't understand how that could possibly work. And I'm a bit pissed that she would allow that to happen to her.

3. The story is a type of mystery. I'm not a fan of mysteries. Why did the deceased man deny he had a family? Our MC, as the description of the book states, finds out she is on a quest for the answers. We get a good chunk of the answer at about 20% and I find it believable but not something I want to spend anymore time with. She will have to go on the quest without me as a witness. I should of read the description better. I'm always worried about spoilers but it would of served me to vet a bit better.

I'm sure it has an audience that would love it. Spend slow time with the characters, learning about their past as it is slowly revealed and watch them make discoveries as they move toward their future. It not what I look for in books, realistic fiction, so I'm going to move on.

This is only the second book by the very popular author, Ann Patchett, that I've read. I wasn't a fan of Commonwealth, but I very much liked The Magician's Assistant. I loved the story, the different locations that were so well rendered, the characters. And oh, the surprises in the plot that came along several times!

The Magician's assistant, Sabine, is a forty-something woman who has been the assistant of the mysterious Parsifal for twenty years. Although Parsifal is gay and develops a serious partnership with Phan, Sabine can't help being in love with him.

In the last year of his life, Phan having died earlier and himself dying of cancer, Parsifal marries Sabine. The story starts then, and what a story!

Sabine discovers the real history of Parsifal, aka Guy Fetters, after his death. He's not from Connecticut, but from Nebraska, and his family has been included in his will. It gets interesting when they ask if they can visit Sabine in Los Angeles.

Sabine develops real feelings for these people, and when they invite her to visit Nebraska, deep in depression over Parsifal's death, she decides to visit.

In Nebraska there are more surprises, more truths to be revealed.

Throughout the story, Sabine processes his death through her dreams, in which Phan appears and talks to her. I thought it was a clever device.

If there was one thing that kept the book from being a 5-star review, it was the ending, which was abrupt, as if the next chapter was missing. You have to decide for yourself what will happen next. ( )

I enjoyed this book a long and but there are a few things that keep me from rating it higher. The biggest of those things is what I felt to be a very dissatisfying ending.

I’d still recommend it to friends, though. I’d give it a 3.5 stars but rounding down. ( )
