Since October 9, 2001, when David Rees posted eight comic strips on his website and called itGet Your War On, tens of millions of people have been entertained and horrified by his clip-arty office workers and their vociferous and profane commentary on the so-called War on Terror. From the first few days of Operation Enduring Freedom to the overhyped pseudo-success of the "surge"--years of fear, bewilderment, violence, and death--Rees has succeeded in depicting a country of grieving, angry, and confused citizens, feeling hatred for--and hatred of--the world beyond our shores.Get Your War On is a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of emotions and moods, including (but not limited to) despair, enraged bewilderment, grief (with a touch of loathing), ecstatic contempt, disgust, and nihilistic exhilaration. This definitive edition ofGet Your War On combines strips from the first two publications with sixty-five percent new material created in the last three years.… (mehr)

Considering the GYWO corpus in its entirety again (I've been going back over my LibraryThing to construct a smallish bookshelf out of the works I gave 5 or 4.5 stars to, because we live in Vancouver in 2016 and as a result are insecurely housed, and I had toooooo many books to move every six months), I basically stand by my former comment--the early strips are acid perfection, the later ones get lose and redundant and unsharp--but also note that they kind of lose their moral compass a little for whether they're punching up or--to a certain extent--down, or at least stop caring about collateral damage (an unforgivable sin when what you're mad about is the conduct of the "War on Terror"): e.g., a strip where the punchline is "Could Rudy Giuliani even exist on a planet that hadn't had 9/11?" is funny, a strip where the punchline is "What's Giuliani gonna do, shoot prostate cancer out his ass at them?" is not. Brutally funny, angry, incisive. Probably not for everyone. ( )

It got kind of tired near the end (no one can sustain that kind of outrage on that kind of timeline), but in its heyday, this was the best takedown of the worst president of all time. ( )

Rees's minimalist, clip-art graphics combined with his profane torrent of raging, pitiless, vicious, relentless attacks on the stupidity of the War on Terror made GET YOUR WAR ON the single consistently credible voice during the Bush Years.
