 A champion of the obscure, this book offers an alternative guide to British days out, shunning mass market attractions like the theme park of the title and instead plumping for the quirky, modest, and we’re told, quintessentially British option. "We want to go to the sort of places that might sound dreadful, dull, grim, cheap…" is not a good start from the authors, who admit they came up with the idea for the book while drunk. While the book does not set out to ridicule, there is some mockery. The Cumberland Pencil Museum entry includes the line: "Pencils don't just happen on their own you know", while at Gnome Magic in Essex we are told tales of gnome kidnapping, suicide and gender discrimination. Forget theme parks. Forget the giants of the museum and gallery world. Get yourself out to some of the quirkier attractions the UK has to offer.
Apart from the ones that closed in the 17 years since this book was published.
I'd visited 9 of the 42 places in this book. I've got another four added to my list of places to go out of my way to visit, and some that I might visit if ever in their neck of the woods. (
