Great fun and extremely cute illustrations. The author is the sister of former Attorney General Janet Reno's mother Jane Wood, and there were some very good writers amongst those Woods. The vignettes Wood describes are so immediate you feel that you are in the room. Or watching in a black and white movie. It has none of the distance of a present-day writer trying to imitate the cadences of the past. The language is authentic and immediate.
The takeaway is the way that none of these women saw themselves as anything extraordinary. But how extraordinary they were! To even do what they did before becoming WASPs is in itself extraordinary. Then to choose to fly straight into danger rather than stay at home to spend the war cultivating a victory garden is the greatest expression of the willingness to sacrifice that our nation took as a matter of course in those days.
