“That Summer,” was a sad book. The book is about a little boy named Joey who is dying. The story is told in the first person, and the narrator of the book is Joey’s brother. Having this story told in the first person makes the book more emotional. The plot of the book takes us through the journey of Joey’s sickness. After reading this book, I believe that the little boy has cancer because he loses his hair. Having the brother of the sick boy tell the story made it harder to read, especially at the end when Joey passed away. At the end of the book, I was crying because it was such an emotional book. The theme that I picked up from the book is to enjoy every day with your love ones. Even though the little boy was losing his brother, he did everything with him that summer. Even if he had to spend his whole summer inside, he wouldn't have changed a thing because he has memories of his brother forever. The book is tough to read. I don't think that I would read this to my class. I believe that this book is better for a parent to read to their children if death is happening in their family. It is a very powerful and emotional book, and I think that because it is told in the first person. It gives the book a more personal feeling having the brother tell the story. ( )

This was a very sad story and by the cover of this book I would’ve never guessed it was about dying. It was so sad to see someone so young pass away and then watching the sibling grieving over his death. I must be terrible to lose someone so close to you at such a young age. I chose this book as a writing mentor but I don’t think I would use it for that. ( )

This is overall, a sad book for me. The way the author writes also confuses me. It doesnt' really tell everything in details but rather makes you guessing what happens or what's going on. ( )
