The big idea of this book is to show what goes on in a bog, including what animals and plants live there and how they all interact with one another. I like this book for two reasons. First, the information is factually accurate with resources and further explanation at the back of the book. The author takes the reader on a short journey through the bog, moving from creature to creature, plant to plant. At the end of the book there is a section showing all of the insects, animals and plants that were present in the book and then explains what the ecosystem of a bog is like. Secondly, I really enjoyed the illustrations. They are very realistic and detailed, showing a full and rich environment within the bog. They style of the illustrations remind of Audubon Society drawings of animals and plants, which is a style that I have always been interested in. ( )

"ONE tick, TWO fleas, THREE flies, FOUR slugs in the belly of the frog/ on a half-sunk log/ in the middle of the bog." As the greedy frog’s belly grows, we are treated to a hilarious view of the claustrophobic quarters within. Is there any hope for these hapless bugs, or are they destined for digestion. This is a great book, for pre-k, to introduce the habitats of frogs and connecting it with finger puppets, poems, and songs teaching in numerical order. ( )
