Epigraph (Motto/Zitat) |
Die Informationen stammen von der englischen "Wissenswertes"-Seite. Ändern, um den Eintrag der eigenen Sprache anzupassen. Behold, I saw upon earth men carrying milkk in earthen vessels and making cheese therefrom. Some was of the thick kind from which a firm cheese is made, some of the thinner sort from whci more porous cheese is mad, and some was mixed with corruption and of the sort from which bitter cheese is made. And I saw the likeness of a woman having a complete human form within her womb...Men and women alike, having in their bodies the seed of mankind form which arr procreated the various kinds of human beings. Part is thickened because the seed in it strength is well and truly concocted and this produced forceful men to whom are allotted gifts both spiritual and carnal...And some had cheese less firmly curdled, for in their feebleness they had seed imperfectly tempered and they raise offspring mostly stupid, feeble and useless....
>from the Liber Scivias of St Hildegard (translated by Singer) In the womb of a mother was I moulded...being compacted with blood of the seed of man and the pleasure that accompanieth sleep. Wisdom of Solomon (vii 2)

In the final analysis, this novel's prose is a bit too purple, its protagonists a bit too gauzily idealized, and its concerns a bit too forthrightly sexual, to be called entirely literary, but it is well-written and the author rarely goes over the limit. Even its dialogue crackles nicely once in a while, which is pretty rare in this genre. It's not entirely satisfying, but is certainly interesting. Recommended to those who seek out curious books for their own sake and to readers who can pick out a good Camembert. ( )
