This book was written by Ed, the youngest brother of Richard, and in many ways, is best seen from his perspective as a little brother who respected and admired his better-known counterpart. Nixon disclaims any revelation vis-a-vis Watergate but he states that Dick thought it better to resign than to have the country experience the trauma of a constitutional crisis. He further claims that he and his brother never discussed one of the most important issues of the twentieth-century presidency. He postulates, and implies blame of course, on Nixon's most zealous supporters. He suspects that Nixon's underlings committed acts in his name but without his foreknowledge nor approval. Since Ed has no intimate knowledge nor any evidence for what he describes he is best seen as a devoted younger brother who is understandably trying to protect his family's good name.

On the other hand, the book, if not revelatory, has merit as an insider's look into the Nixon family. And in this regard, the book has substance. Ed provides a glimpse into the family balance of power between the Nixon brother's parents. In this, Ed is more revealing and worthwhile.

Richard the politician tried to balance the dual heritage he inherited from his parents. From his pious Quaker mother, Richard gained a desire for genuine world peace based on the strength of the U.S. On his father's side, Richard sought to emphasize personal responsibility and limited government.

Most revealingly in his book (a summary is included in an Appendix), Beyond Peace, Richard provided a prescription for America which is a balance of the somewhat contradictory tendencies of his parents. Nonetheless, Peace is relevant application to many of America's problems in a period of the post-Obama inauguration.
