On the other hand, the book, if not revelatory, has merit as an insider's look into the Nixon family. And in this regard, the book has substance. Ed provides a glimpse into the family balance of power between the Nixon brother's parents. In this, Ed is more revealing and worthwhile.
Richard the politician tried to balance the dual heritage he inherited from his parents. From his pious Quaker mother, Richard gained a desire for genuine world peace based on the strength of the U.S. On his father's side, Richard sought to emphasize personal responsibility and limited government.
Most revealingly in his book (a summary is included in an Appendix), Beyond Peace, Richard provided a prescription for America which is a balance of the somewhat contradictory tendencies of his parents. Nonetheless, Peace is relevant application to many of America's problems in a period of the post-Obama inauguration.
