"Glidden, a progressive American Jew who is sharply critical of Israeli policies vis-á-vis the Occupied Territories, went on an all-expense-paid 'birthright' trip to Israel in an attempt to discover some grand truths at the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This graphic memoir tells the touching and often funny story of her utter failure to do so."--Amazon.com.… (mehr)

Aufzeichnungen aus Jerusalem von Guy Delisle (lorax)
lorax: As "graphic novels about visiting Israel" the connection is obvious, but the benefits of reading both do go beyond that. Delisle's stay is considerably longer, but he sees less of the country, and more day-to-day life; Glidden's on a highly managed trip where she sees more of the tourist sites, but none of the settlements (where Delisle spends much of his time). They complement each other well.… (mehr)

Very accomplished book from Sarah Glidden, essentially exploring her relationship to Israel and how it evolves over a Birthright trip to the country. It's very interesting, and I learnt quite a bit. Of course her relationship and opinions are highly subjective, and there's an introspective air to it; in short, this is about Glidden as well as about Israel - none the worse for that, but it's not a history or political treatise about Israel. For my money, it could have been a little more introspective, with a bit more philosophising about her changing attitudes, but that's me.

The art in the book is really lovely - Glidden has a very effective cartooning style. I'll definitely be on the lookout for her work. Recommended. ( )

I think anyone could pick up this graphic novel and enjoy it, but I don't think anyone could have much of an understanding of the conflict after reading it. But, this comic isn't really meant to explain the conflict. It's more of a diary of a birthright trip to Israel from the point of view of a woman who has become personally, emotionally caught up in the conflict and what it means for her in terms of her Jewish identity. I'd read something about that before, that Israel's changing nature presents a challenge to Jews outside Israel. When I finished looking at the last page, I think I had a little more insight into what it might be like for a Jew to confront the realities of Israel after being steeped in the literature of a century of Jewish conflict in the region. This graphic novel follows one woman’s travels with a tour group through Israel in 2007. I thought the subject matter was fascinating, but the negative and combative attitude of the author (and main character) was exhausting. ( )

An interesting peak on the other side makes you rethink that the situation is not as simple as we tend to think it is ( )
