The plot took a fair time to develope and I found myself being frustrated at the slow speed of the story. That said, it was still a good read with an exciting climax. ( ) I couldn’t put this book down! Having loved Neil White’s previous two books with Jack Garrett I was very pleased to get hold of a copy of the third one. I opened the cover with enthusiasm and was instantly swept away (again). However, there was one change this time and that I actually found it just a little scary in places, which doesn’t usually happen to me. There was something about this plot that made it feel very different to the other two but I don’t know why. Reporter Jack Garrett and his girlfriend, DC Laura McGanity have become trapped in a custody battle that began in ‘Lost Souls’ and this is covered throughout ‘Last Rites’. Because of the custody battle, Laura wanted to stay away from the tough cases, focusing on her son Bobby instead. Unfortunately this wasn’t to stay like that for long and Laura soon becomes caught up in the case of Sarah Goode, missing since the murder of her boyfriend Luke Howarth. As with all thrillers that have very short chapters you are left whirling through the pages thinking “just another other one” and then you realise that you’ve been doing that for fifty pages or so! Superbly written and completely captivating this book is compelling reading. If you look close enough all the clues are there right in front of you on the page but even if you do unravel the mystery you’ll still need to read to the end to find out whether you were right or not. After the death of her parents, well-bred young city girl Kathryn must travel across country to live with her Aunt Belle. Arriving at her destination in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Kathryn is horrified to learn her new home is a group of shacks called River Falls, a Metis community. Kathryn has never known about her true heritage, a mix of Native-American and Euro-Canadian. She is even more shocked to discover theirs is not even a permanent home. Barred from owning land, the Metis must find a way to live in the road allowances, or ditches--the strips of government land between public highways and the private properties of recognized citizens. Excitement comes in the form of a mysterious stranger known as the Highwayman, a shadowy Robin Hood figure who rights wrongs against his people in his own way. When he is framed for a crime he did not commit, and Aunt Belle becomes involved, Kathryn must use all her resources to prove their innocence--and challenge the deep-seated prejudices of an entire community. Outcasts of River Falls is a next-generation sequel to the award-winning Belle of Batoche. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
