I give the author 5 stars for surviving and then finding some good out of a devastating and brutal event. I appreciate the author being able to find peace and a purpose after such a traumatic night. Personally I believe it would have taken me much longer than 8 months to heal, both mentally and emotionally. Every one is different though and the book tells an interesting accounting. I read this in a day. I was expecting it to be heavy faith wise and that was true. I was fascinated by the author's ability to forgive. I'm not certain I buy it completely but I do hope for the best for him. I think I will read another accounting of this crime. I am interested in hearing more about Erin's involvement. I do think the author, out of love, kind of glossed over her role. I would like to see what someone who has no emotional tie to anyone has to say. The book is a compelling read. I found it interesting that the author talks about his own lack of faith while at the same time he presented a very faithful face to his family and friends. I thought that was pretty telling in how he processes things and could be a factor in his rapid healing. I think most people would go through a time of being angry at God and I appreciated his sharing of how he reconciled that. I just can't help wondering if he didn't push down and bury some of his feelings, even though he did go through counseling. ( ) Have the tissues ready. This is a tragic story of a daughter who meets the wrong guy and turns against her parents. It is very difficult for the father, Terry Caffey, to understand how his little girl could plot the murder of her whole family just so she can be with Charlie. Terry was shot 5 times and left for dead, but he survived the shooting and the house fire to tell the authorities that the shooter was Charlie. Through his immense grief he struggles with asking God for answers. God comes through in a miraculous way. Terry goes on to give his testimony in the Baptist church and finds release in helping others who have suffered great loss. This is a story of a man's struggle and his ability to forgive. At 3:00 a.m. on March 1, 2008, Terry Caffey awoke to find his daughter's boyfriend standing in his bedroom with a gun. An instant later the teen opened fire, killing Terry's wife, his two sons, and wounding him 12 times, before setting the house ablaze. Terry fell into deep depression and planned to kill himself, but God intervened. Upon visiting his burned-out property, Terry noticed a scorched scrap of paper from one of his wife's books leaning against a tree trunk. The page read: "[God,] I couldn't understand why You would take my family and leave me behind to struggle along without them. And I guess I still don't totally understand that part of it. But I do believe that You're sovereign; You're in control." That page was like a direct message from God, and it turned Terry's life around. Now, one year later, Terry is remarried, the adoptive father of two young sons, and working to rebuild his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter, who is currently serving two life sentences in a Texas state penitentiary for her involvement in the crimes. Terror by Nighttells the compelling story of how Terry Caffey found peace after his wife and sons were brutally murdered and his teenage daughter implicated in the crime. Sharing never-before-told details about the night of the crime and subsequent murder trial, it explains how Terry was able to forgive the men who murdered his family, and how he even interceded with the prosecutors on their behalf. A powerful example of how the power of forgiveness can bring healing after tragedy and great loss, it shows how God can bring good out of even the darkest tragedies.
